It.s no longer ‘what do I prefer?’ In Genesis 3:17, God said to Adam, “cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life” RSV . While most people think of a vocation than what they are called to do in life, it is important to understand that the first and most important call from God is a call to be – the universal call to holiness. To discover and declare truth as it is, and facts as they are, is the vocation of the scholar. But a vocation is more than an ordinary call. How does that Providence reconcile its decrees with liberty of human action in the choice of a state of life? As we grow and life progresses, he makes it known to us, usually in indirect ways, more as an invitation than an imposition. And the answer depends on the preceding data: yes, if your intention is honest, and if your strength is sufficient for the work. In this Christian academic community, faith and action are considered together. Everybody is called by God to know, love and serve him.
